Serenity, Princess of the Moon, was the strongest and oldest of the senshi of the Solar System. When the gods departed, she was given the task of overseeing it and preserving its peace. She succeeded in doing so for some 2375 years, and though her reign ended in failure, she managed to salvage some hope from the disaster. Serenity was less powerful than Sailor Moon was to become. Her chief weapons were the Silver Empyrean Crystal and the Moon Stick. Her chief attack was 'Moon Healing Escalation.'

In character, Queen Serenity was very like her daughter (although more dignified), self-sacrificing and well-intentioned, but also careless and lazy. Serenity's most fatal flaw was a sort of optimism, which allowed her to blind herself to the threats posed by Beryl and Galaxia.

Princess Serenity had the innate capacity to become Eternal Sailor Moon, but because of her sheltered upbringing, she had developed less in 2100 years than her later incarnation in 15. She did have powers; her protectors often decried her habit of casually teleporting to Earth. Like all the princesses of the Moon, she had an intimate connection with the Empyrean Silver Crystal (it is, in fact, their shared star seed, the star seed of the Moon).

Powers associated with Sailor Moon include the use of the Moon Tiara: "Moon Tiara Action," "Moon Tiara Stardust," and "Moon Twilight Flash." She could control the tiara in flight, moderate its effect, and cause it to tangle a foe. Later she employed the Moon Stick, with the attack "Moon Healing Escalation," and the Empyrean Silver Crystal, with the attack "Moon Cosmic Power." In her 'power up,' she employed the Moon Scepter with the attack "Moon Princess Halation." Later she obtained the Spiral Heart Moon Rod, using the attack "Moon Spiral Heart Attack." In addition, her hair globes could amplify her hearing and turn her shrieks into an offensive weapon, and her glasses held the power of clairvoyance.

As Super Sailor Moon, she used the Spiral Heart Moon Rod and the Sacred Cup for the "Rainbow Moon Heart Ache." Later she used the Kaleid Moonscope, whose attack was "Moon Gorgeous Meditation." As Eternal Sailor Moon, she obtained 'princess wings,' with the power to fly and to travel anywhere. Her new weapon was the Moon Power Tier, with attacks "Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss" and "Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss." At least as valuable as these power foci was her ability to receive energy from the other senshi and concentrate it through the ginzuishou, "Silver Crystal Power." By drawing on the other Sailors, she could use the Crystal's full power without killing herself. Even without the Crystal, she could combine with them for "Sailor Teleport" and "Sailor Planet Power." Another version included the Outer Senshi: "Sailor Planet Meditation." These senshi powers could be attempted without her as well.

In character, Princess Serena was kawaii, gentle, loving, self-sacrificing, and well-intentioned, but also lazy, careless, undisciplined, and moody. She was not as clumsy as her later incarnation, however. She possesses a remarkable gift for friendship.

In the manga, Sailor Venus was the leader of the Inner Senshi; although in the anime this role was usually taken by Mars. Some believe she was romantically involved with Guardian Kunzite.

Venus's senshi attack was "Crescent Beam"; her power up attacks were "Crescent Beam Shower" and "Venus Love-Me Chain." Note that the chain could be used to attack, to grap, or extended like a rope. As Super Sailor Venus, she used the "Venus Love and Beauty Shock." Other Venus attacks were the "Rolling Heart Vibration," the "Venus Wink Chain Sword," and the "Crescent Boomerang." In the manga, Venus employed a metal chain as a focus and sometimes wielded the powerful Moon Sword.

Venus is very like a more focused, less charismatic version of her princess. She is self-sacrificing to a fault, possibly to compensate for perceived limitations. Her careless, breezy manner can be annoying.

Sailor Jupiter is the most physically powerful of the senshi and well versed in martial arts. Her loyalty is total. Jupiter is unique among the Inner Senshi in her capability to push her abilities and develop new skills through practice and training. She has been romantically associated with Guardian Nephrite.

Jupiter's senshi attacks are "Supreme Thunder" and "Flower Hurricane." Her power up attacks are "Supreme Thunder Dragon" and "Sparkling Vital Pressure." As Super Sailor Jupiter, she uses "Jupiter Oak Evolution" and "Jupiter Coconut Cyclone." She is also capable of closing with the enemy in hand to hand combat.

Jupiter is regarded as a happy warrior; she never starts a fight, but will not give an inch to avoid one. Although not quick tempered, her wrath is terrible when roused. But this is only part of her persona. At heart she is very feminine, cherishing romance and flowers. Her desire for a more ordinary life has often been used against her.

Sailor Mars is distinguished by her psychic and supernatural powers. She has a bickering sisters relationship with Sailor Moon. She is said to have been associated with Guardian Jadeite.

Mars's senshi attack is "Fire Soul." Her power up attacks are "Fire Soul Bird" and "Burning Mandala." As Super Sailor Mars, she uses "Mars Flame Sniper."

Mars is intelligent and talented, but also stubborn, quick-tempered, opinionated, aggressive, and a bit of a bully. She tends to back down when rebuked by Jupiter or Venus. When it counts, however, she is a fierce fighter and extremely brave.

Sailor Mercury is the 'genius girl' of the team; in terms of pure intelligence, she may be the brightest person in the Solar System. She may have been involved with Guardian Zoisite.

Mercury's senshi attack is "Shabon Spray," a blinding fog which can be used offensively or as a shield. Her power up attacks are "Shabon Spray Freezing" and "Shine Aqua Illusion." She has also used the "Double Shabon Spray Freezing." As Super Sailor Mercury, she uses the "Mercury Aqua Rhapsody." She always carries a miniature supercomputer and often uses an attached visor.

Mercury is kind and gentle, but a more passive character than the others. She is easily bullied or snubbed and is vulnerable to embarrassment and discouragement. She has a strong sense of isolation and periodically falls into a state of acute hopelessness and depression.

As a group, the Inner Senshi can combine to execute the "Sailor Teleport" and "Sailor Planet Power'" and can combine with the Outer Senshi for the "Sailor Planet Meditation." They can energize Sailor Moon for "Moon Cosmic Power" and Super Sailor Moon for "Silver Crystal Power."

Luna and Artemis were from the planet Mau, whose inhabitants have both humanoid and feline forms. After it was lost to Galaxia, they sought refuge in Silver Millenium. The energy strain of the trip left them trapped in their cat forms until 1994. Although weak and powerless, the 'Guardian Cats' have powerful minds and remarkable skills. They served Queen Serenity as advisors and were the only beings (aside from Sailor Pluto) to survive the fall of Silver Millenium. Luna later served Sailor Moon as her guardian/mentor/advisor. Artemis similarly served Sailor Venus. Artemis is the more technically minded of the two, but unlucky and clumsy, a feline nerd. He was always in love with Luna, but she did not return his affections until much later.

The 'army' of the Moon Kingdom, these low powered normals wore plate armor and carried polearms.
