About five billion years ago, the mysterious Galaxy Cauldron, located in Zero Star Sagittarius in the center of the Galaxy, began to produce star seeds, which soon spread throughout the stars. The star seeds are the origin of life as we know it, and of the planets and stars as well. It was in the nature of the star seeds to separate out the good, the useful, the promising and the light, from the galactic chaos which preceded them. However, the rejected dross, the evil and the darkness, had a quasi-life of its own, and forever strives to overcome the children of the star seeds.

Some four-and-a half billion years ago, the entity later known as Snow Princess Kaguya was expelled from the Solar System by the nascent Silver Empyrean Crystal; this is the first known incident of the 'Cosmic War Between Good and Evil,' which was to thereafter dominate the Galaxy. Presumably similar incidents occurred in other star systems formed, purging themselves of evil essences. The star seed known as the Silver Crystal shaped matter into the Moon, the Golden Crystal gathered the Sun, and the various Sailor seeds formed the other planets. Nevertheless, many remnants and impurities of darkness and evil remained inside the new star systems.

Not later than 200,000 BC, human life began to appear across the Galaxy, each person originating in a star seed. The different branches of the human races took various forms, most apparently quite humanoid, others with feline, avian, or other characteristics. The first generation of senshi appeared at the same time; these early warriors are remembered as gods. The new warriors were faced by an immediate challenge from the entities of darkness which had survived the formation of the stars. The most important of these evils was Chaos, whose will it was to consume the entire Galaxy and all of its inhabitants. Chaos was a strange being which drew power from the imperfections inside the children of the star seeds themselves; its reach darkened the whole Galaxy. It was, in some sense, the Overlord of Darkness, and most of the lesser evils acknowledged its supremacy. Under its leadership, they came too close to total victory. The 'Chaos War' represents the second phase of the cosmic wars.

Chaos's conquests were terrifying; it was a battle of unmatched power. Sailor Senshi all over the Galaxy stood against Chaos and its minions. Many were defeated and slain, their planets ravaged or destroyed. Others won local victories, preserving their peoples for a time; the Solar System seems to have been in this group. But the general course of the war was unfavorable. It was about this time that Chaos, by drawing upon the imperfections within the Galaxy Cauldron itself, caused it to create an evil star seed. This later became the Black Crystal of Death Planet Nemesis, its senshi the Death Phantom. This chaos seed was the last created; no new star seeds were ever made.

Sailor Galaxia was the greatest of the senshi in power and courage, but also the proudest and most self-willed. Knowing that she alone had the will to defeat Chaos, she resolved to engage it by herself, alone and unaided. Chaos was most vulnerable at the center of its power, the planetary mass which was its physical body. It was an epic battle, but Galaxia gained the upper hand, thrusting her sword into the evil's body. The crust of Chaos planet shattered and its essence flowed free. Rather than allow it to escape and reform, she boldly absorbed Chaos into herself. Chaos was defeated and sealed away; the effect was felt everywhere as its dark grip was lifted from the Galaxy. The Chaos War was over.

Moments later, Galaxia realized her error. Trapped inside her, Chaos was now exerting all its power to take possession of her! Rather than allow it to be corrupted, Galaxia released her star seed, the Light of Hope, to escape into the stars. But without hope, she quickly fell before Chaos's will. Either because it had been weakened by its defeat, or because that was its nature, Chaos did not simply possess Galaxia. Rather it strove to corrupt her, fanning her arrogance and self-reliance into megalomania and power lust. She became persuaded that only she was fit to determine the future of the Galaxy. Chaos showed her how to make star bracelets to replace her sacrificed star seed, and which could draw the seeds from others. She resolved to gather all the star seeds in the Galaxy, then remake it in her own image. As the Chaos War ended, the Sailor Wars against Galaxia began. She spent the next 100,000 years conquering planets and collecting their seeds. Those senshi who opposed her were killed and their seeds taken as well. Some, however, surrendered and were permitted to serve her; these were given star bracelets like hers.

The Solar System, which was on the far side of the Galaxy from these events, found this an era of peace and progress. There were three inhabited planets in this system, the lush but backward Earth, the evolved but barren Moon, and the so-called Dead Moon. In 12,400 BC, the last gods departed. The senshi of Earth was made king of that planet, with the task of protecting the 'sacred' realm of Golden Elysium, ruled by Prince Helios, senshi of the Sun and keeper of the Golden Crystal. Serenity, senshi of the Moon and keeper of the Silver Crystal, was made Queen of Silver Millenium, with the general task of protecting the Solar System and guiding the evolution of Earth; she was to be served by the eight senshi: Pluto, Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn, who were later joined by Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter. Her sister, Neherenia, was given the Dead Moon and the Asteroid Senshi. Although Serenity was adequate to her task, Neherenia was a mere child at the time, and unready for such responsibility.

Around 12,300BC, Galaxia conquered the planet Mau, which was betrayed by its senshi, Sailor Tin Nyanko. Two survivors, Luna and Artemis, fled into space and eventually found refuge on the Moon. With the short-sighted optimism so characteristic of her, Serenity decided not to involve herself in the Sailor Wars, but to concentrate on the peace and well-being of the Solar System.

On June 30, 12,122 BC, Princess Serena, daughter of Serenity, was born, and the Inner Senshi appeared to serve her. By 10,100 BC they had grown to girlhood and had begun coming into their powers.

The fall of Silver Millenium began in 10,025 BC. Although surrounded by the uncritical adoration of her subjects, Queen Neherenia had spent her life alone, her only companion an accursed Dark Mirror. She had become obsessed with her own youth and beauty. But at 2700, she was passing her peak, aging more quickly than her older sister (see life spans). Zirconia, the Mirror Demon, tempted her to preserve herself through evil. Using dark magics, she first robbed her subjects of their dream mirrors, transforming them into zombie-like lemures. She then attempted to steal the Golden Crystal from Helios, but was repelled by its power. Before she could do more harm, Queen Serenity sealed her, her moon, and her people into another dimension, never to return?

Shortly thereafter, Princess Serena fell in love with Prince Endymion of Earth. This was against the law of the gods, who had forbidden unions between inhabitants of the different planets, however no one, least of all Serenity, took that law very seriously. But their love aroused the envy of Beryl, a minor witch who also desired Endymion.

At about the same time, Prince Helios decided to purify Golden Elysium of Neherenia's taint and to remove it from the mundane dimension. This involved expelling certain dark impurities from the Sun. In fact, the impurity was a survivor of chaos which had adapted to absorb energy from life; her name was Metallia. Expelled from the Sun, Metallia fell to Earth (Winter Solstice, 10,023 BC), where she was discovered by Beryl. Together they established a Dark Kingdom at the North Pole. Playing on their human weaknesses, Beryl drew the Guardians of Earth from their loyalty and made herself ruler of theplanet; Prince Endymion was forced to flee to the Moon. Those who served Queen Beryl were transformed into yoma of terrible powers, those who opposed her were killed or driven into the wilderness. Many cities were destroyed, including Atlantis. Using stolen energy, Queen Metallia proceeded to darken the Sun, increasing her own power.

Although worried by the sunspots and the fall of Earth, Queen Serenity resolved to carry on with the princess's celebration. June 30, 10,022. This was her 2100^th birthday, her 'coming-of-age' in Moon tradition. The queen was aware that the date was marked by a total solar eclipse, but did not realize its significance.

On the day in question, Beryl massed her army in the ruins of Golden Tokyo, formerly capital of Earth. When the eclipse began, Metallia's power of darkness reached its peak; she created a magic bridge of invasion to the Moon. Beryl and Metallia arrived at the height of the festivities. Serenity was engaged by Beryl's servants the 'Seven Shadows.' By the time she had killed them, everyone else on the Moon, except for Luna and Artemis, were dead: Serena, Endymion, the senshi, the entire population. In her grief, Serenity unleashed the full power of the Silver Crystal, sealing Metallia, Beryl, and the Dark Kingdom into eternal sleep. Since the Moon was destroyed she sent the star seeds of its people to Earth in hopes that they would be reborn there. Luna and Artemis were placed in suspended animation to await their return. Exhausted by the effort, Serenity died.

Exactly 12,000 years later, in 1979, the Moon Princess was reborn as Tsukino Usagi of Tokyo. She had no memory of her previous existence. By this time, Galaxia had overrun over 75% of the Galaxy and was proceeding in this direction. In 1980, she destroyed Coronis; Sailors Phoebus and Deimos fled to Earth where they befriended the young Hino Rei. In 1992, she began a drawn-out attack on the Kinmoku system. The approach of Chaos stirred the Dark Evils in this vicinity into renewed activity. The seal on the Dark Kingdom was broken. The reincarnated Moon Princess assumed the role of Sailor Moon; she and the reincarnated inner senshi succeeded in destroying Beryl and Metallia. They then faced a series of evil invasions, 1993-95: the Black Moon, Death Phantom, the Kisenian Flower, Pharoah 90, Snow Princess Kaguya, Madame Vadne, and a renewed attack by Neherenia. In the course of these battles, she gained the support of the other Solar senshi, including Tuxedo Mask, the Outer Senshi, and the Asteroid Senshi.

Kinmoku fell to Galaxia in late 1994; the surviving senshi, Princess Kakyuu and the Sailor Starlights, escaped to Earth. In April 1995, Galaxia's attack on Earth began. After a series of battles, she was defeated by Eternal Sailor Moon, ending the Sailor Wars. The star seeds were freed to rebuild the Galaxy.

In 2001, the Earth fell into a 'Great Sleep.' In 2051, Sailor Moon revived the planet through the power of the Silver Crystal. She and Tuxedo Mask, the senshi of Earth, assumed the rule of the world as Neo-Queen Serenity and Neo-King Endymion. Together, they established the city of Crystal Tokyo, capital of the second Silver Millenium. The remaining dark evils on Earth were destroyed or driven out.

In 2091, the princess Chiba Usagi called Small Lady, was born in Crystal Tokyo.

A group of evil humans, dark magicians calling themselves the 'Black Moon Clan,' fled Silver Millenium to take refuge on the unknown tenth planet, Nemesis. Here they fell under the influence of Death Phantom. In 2993, they launched a devastating attack on Crystal Tokyo, but were eventually defeated. This is believed to mark the end of the cosmic wars.
